Since migrating to USA she’s held teaching stints at two Colleges here in Tulsa as Instructor of Technology & Business Studies. She is creative and is very passionate about helping to empower women to be their best self. This passion has led her down the path of becoming an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics, as it affords her the opportunity to meet many women and touch their lives in unique ways.
Charles holds a BA Degre in Business Administration from John Brown University. He attended JBU as a result of being awarded a soccer scholarship when he was 18. After completing his studies, he returned to Barbados and worked as a Youth Worker with the Barbados Inter school/Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship (ISCF/IVCF) for a number of years. Because of his business background he’s held stints as Sales & Marketing Manager for Office Solutions and Solar Energy Solutions companies. All this was simultaneously while functioning as a Minister of Religion.
The family moved to the USA from their Island home Barbados in 2012. They came to Tulsa Oklahoma specifically to connect with a local Church led by Apostle Dr Joel Laurore, whom they met in Toronto Canada and later in Barbados, and who they see as a Spiritual Father. “Our lives were tremendously impacted by his own life and ministry, and at some point, we felt God was nudging us to relocate to Tulsa to be with this Ministry so we could be practically trained and prepared in a new way as Ministers of the Gospel which is a large part of who we are. We did relocate for an initial period of three years and then we returned to our home country. After nine years we felt it was time to return but this time we established residency and made Tulsa our home. We hear this question “but why leave the Sun & Sea to come to Tulsa. Why of all places, can we switch places with you?” We didn’t come to pursue the American Dream as most often do. We came because we believe that this is where God wants us to be at this time. We consider ourselves self-supporting Missionaries to the USA. Our heart is to serve the people that God has brought us to, in our unique way. Part of this uniqueness is worked out daily as we work Green Hibiscus.
Charles the Lawn & Garden Specialist of the Company is an outdoors enthusiast and knew that when he moved to Tulsa he would want to continue to spent his time outdoors and talking to people. It wasn’t until two years after relocating that he decided to start up a professional Lawncare/Landscape Business. Charles was no stranger to this business in that he’s the son of an Agronomist and therefore a second generationer, having grown up around plants & turf all his life. He played a vital role in the family business Cumberbatch Plant Nursery in Barbados since he was 15 years old when methodologies looked a lot different from today’s. In Barbados, just as his three brothers do, he’d always held a Lawncare/Landscape Design operations as a side kick while he pursued his Career. With his incurable passion for the outdoors Charles continued to work with lawns and gardens and has accumulated over 40 years of experience. It was therefore in his heart that this would be the path of choice he would pursue for his outdoor passion. Though he holds a number of certificates in horticulture and landscape design, to perfect his craft, in 2013 he became a member of the Tulsa Master Gardener program gaining extensive specialist knowledge of the Oklahoma subtropical terrain. After completing his training, in April of 2014 he launched Green Hibiscus. Initially Charles was the sole person at the helm and did mostly lawn maintenance while Monica being still employed as College Instructor, provided all the administrative support to the business.
Charles is an avid plant plant-lover; therefore, Garden Design & Installation is the segment of the business that he’s most passionate about and gets the most satisfaction doing. Garden work is time consuming and is a slower pace job. It’s a job which many Lawncare workers seldom want to take on because it cuts the day’s momentum, slowing them down and making their operation less profitable. For example, a guy can mow 15-20 lawns per day but realistically can only do 2-3 gardens a day depending on their scope. Homeowners who are not used to doing their gardens/flower beds themselves seldom appreciate the hours involved and how it takes away from a regular business day unless there is a crew dedicated to it. It’s with an awareness of these gaps that Green Hibiscus designed their services to focus on, and meet these needs at a price point that was still affordable to the customer. Frequently we hear homeowners express “I can’t get anyone to weed or care for my flowerbeds”, therefore our greatest satisfaction comes from the smiles and sense of gratitude from a customer when we transform their yard or bring back to life their over ran, overgrown garden.
Our mission is simply is to bring a smile to our customers’ faces and warmth to their hearts by providing a service where we are intentional about doing it right the first time. We operate on the biblical principle that “a man’s (person) gift makes room for him and sets him before Kings” therefore when we do quality work and do it right the first time our work will speak for itself and will open greater doors for us. We were created to be social beings and we’ve come to realize that a lot of the folks we meet are lonely and sometimes just need someone to talk to. Although when we are working we are quite busy we deliberately make time to connect with and talk to our customers especially our elderly customers. Sometimes we even get the opportunity to pray with them if they are experiencing any kind of difficulty – emotional or illness, and speak encouraging words to them. Charles is fun-loving with a booming voice and loves to sing. He can generally be found singing his day away as he works. Many times unknown to him, someone would be listening and he has experienced occasions where a customer would come out and ask him to ‘sing that song again for me’.
In 2016 Monica quit her full time job to come along side Charles not only as his administrative support but giving full fledge hands-on assistance with design, installation and maintenance. She is innately creative and has the rare ability to fuse her passions - from developing & teaching early childhood curricula, conducting business mastermind groups, creating natural skin care products using botanic & essential oils, conducting skin care classes to designing and creating beautiful outdoor spaces. Charles and Monica have continued the tradition of a family owned and managed business. This gives them the control over the quality of service they desire to provide while still operating with great efficiency and professionalism. No strangers to getting their hands dirty, they have put their skills and experiences together to form and lead a professional team to achieve their #1 goal of providing quality Lawn & Garden service without compromise.
